Toilet and bathroom Vastu

Toilets are where Vastu advice gets most alarming online. The reality is simple: traditional texts place disposal spaces in the north-west or west and keep them away from the north-east, south-west and centre. If yours isn’t there, there are sensible, low-cost things to do.

Check your toilet / bathroom

Which zone of your home is it in?

North is at the top. Not sure? Use the compass.

Best direction for the toilet / bathroom

Toilets are disposal spaces, so Vastu places them in the north-west or west (and, in 16-zone practice, the SSW or WNW). The north-east, south-west and the centre are the zones most consistently advised against.

Inside the room, whatever its zone

  • Position the WC so you face north or south while seated (the seat axis runs north–south).
  • Keep the bathroom door closed and ensure good ventilation and an exhaust fan.
  • Fix leaking taps and drains promptly.

WC seat direction

The common recommendation is that you face north or south while seated — the seat’s axis runs north–south. Facing east or west is traditionally avoided. This is usually the easiest thing to correct during a bathroom upgrade.

Bathing area vs toilet

A bathing area without a WC is treated differently: east and north are acceptable for bathing. Many modern combined bathrooms can be improved by placing the WC in the room’s south or west part and the shower/basin towards the north or east.

If your toilet is in the north-east or centre

  1. Keep the door shut and the lid down; ventilate with an exhaust fan.
  2. Keep it dry, bright and odour-free; fix leaks immediately.
  3. Use another toilet as the main family toilet if you have one.
  4. In a renovation, convert it to storage or an open area and relocate the WC to the north-west or west.

Frequently asked questions

Which direction is best for a toilet?

North-west and west are the most widely recommended; in 16-zone practice the SSW and WNW zones are also used. North-east, south-west and the centre are most consistently avoided.

Which way should the toilet seat face?

Traditionally, the seat is placed so you face north or south while seated.

Is a toilet in the north-east really harmful?

It is considered the least favourable toilet placement in traditional Vastu. That is a belief-based assessment, not a scientific one. Keeping it clean, closed and ventilated is the common practical approach.

Can a toilet be above or below a pooja room or kitchen?

Traditional guidance avoids toilets directly above, below or sharing a wall with a prayer room or the stove wall.
