South-facing homes have an unfair reputation online. Classical texts list no favourable entrance pada on the south wall, but many contemporary practitioners consider well-planned south-facing homes perfectly livable, and in hot climates the layout can be very comfortable.
Neutral — depends on layout
Inside: rooms rated Ideal for each zone. Outside ring: the 32 entrance padas —green = auspicious, amber = mixed (Brihat Samhita 53.72–75 reading).
Best main door position
In the Brihat Samhita reading, none of the eight south padas is listed as auspicious, so the classical text does not give a “best” south door. Many modern practitioners prefer doors in the middle-to-east part of the south wall (S3–S4) and avoid the south-west end (S6–S8). Treat this as practitioner opinion rather than the classical text.

How to confirm your home is south facing
Stand in your main doorway and face outward. If you are looking south, the home is south facing. Measure it with the compass in house-facing mode, or — more reliably in apartments — trace your building on the map direction finder. A building tilted more than about 20° is closer to a corner (vidisha) facing.
Recommended layout
Focus on the interior: keep the north-east open and light at the rear, kitchen in the south-east (front-right when you face the house from the road), master bedroom in the south-west (front-left), heavier construction and staircase towards the south and west.
Room placements in Vastu depend on the zone, not on the facing — a south-east kitchen is ideal whichever way the house faces. What the facing changes is where the entrance and circulation fall. To find where each of your rooms falls, use the floor plan analyzer or the Vastu Checker.
It is not inherently bad. Classical texts are cautious about south entrances, but the interior layout has a much larger effect on a home’s overall Vastu alignment.
What can I do in a south-facing house?
Avoid a door in the south-west end of the wall, keep the north-east open and light, and follow the standard room placements. Use the Vastu Checker to see which rooms matter most.
