Bedroom Vastu

Bedroom Vastu covers three things: which zone each bedroom is in, where the bed sits inside the room, and which way your head points while sleeping. The last two are free to change.

Which zone of your home is it in?

North is at the top. Not sure? Use the compass.

Best direction for the master bedroom

The south-west (earth element) is associated with stability, so it is traditionally reserved for the head of the household. The south-east (fire) and north-east (kept light and open) are generally avoided for the main bedroom.

Inside the room, whatever its zone

  • Place the bed in the south-west part of the room with the headboard against the south or west wall.
  • Sleep with your head towards the south or east; most texts advise against sleeping with the head to the north.
  • Keep heavy wardrobes on the south or west walls and the north-east of the room light.

Best direction for the children’s / guest bedroom

West and north-west are the most commonly recommended zones for children and guests; the south-west is usually kept for the head of the family.

  • Children: study desk facing east or north; bed with head towards south or east.
  • Guests: the north-west room is the traditional guest room.

Bed placement inside the room

  • Place the bed in the south-west part of the room, headboard against the south or west wall.
  • Leave space on both sides of a double bed.
  • Avoid sleeping directly under a beam.
  • Mirrors that reflect the bed are traditionally discouraged; cover or move them.
  • Keep heavy wardrobes on the south or west walls and the north-east corner light.

Sleeping direction

Most Vastu texts recommend sleeping with your head towards the south (or east, especially for students), and advise against the head to the north. Check yours with the sleeping direction checker: lay your phone on the bed with its top towards the pillow.

Frequently asked questions

Which direction should the master bedroom be in?

South-west is the most widely recommended. South and west are good alternatives. North-east and south-east are generally avoided for the main bedroom.

Which direction should I sleep in according to Vastu?

Head towards south is the most common recommendation, with east as an alternative. Head towards north is the direction most texts advise against.

Is a bedroom in the north-east bad?

Traditional Vastu prefers to keep the north-east light and open, so it is not ideal for the main bedroom. If you have no choice, keep the room uncluttered and place the bed in the room’s south-west part.

Where should the wardrobe be in a bedroom?

Along the south or west wall, or in the south-west corner of the room.
