The 32 entrance padas

The perimeter of the Vastu Purusha Mandala is divided into 32 padas, 8 per side, each held by a deity. They are counted clockwise: east from the north-east corner, south from the south-east, west from the south-west and north from the north-west. Angular ranges below are for a square plot measured from its centre; for real plots, the door’s position along the wall is what counts (the floor plan analyzer measures it that way).

Frequently asked questions

How many directions are there in Vastu?

Vastu uses 8 directions (4 cardinal + 4 corners) plus the centre (Brahmasthan). For finer analysis the circle is divided into 16 zones of 22.5° each, and the perimeter into 32 entrance padas.

What are the degrees of north-east in Vastu?

In the 8-direction system, north-east spans 22.5° to 67.5°. In the 16-zone system, the NE zone is narrower: 33.75° to 56.25°.

How do I use a Vastu chakra on a floor plan?

Print the chakra on a transparent sheet at a size similar to your plan, place its centre on the centre (Brahmasthan) of your plan, and rotate it so its N points to the plan’s true north. Or skip printing and use the floor plan analyzer, which does this on screen.

Which direction is the most important in Vastu?

Traditional texts give special importance to the north-east (kept light, open and clean), the south-west (kept heavy and stable) and the centre (kept open).
