Vastu for flats and apartments

Most Vastu advice was written for independent houses. In a flat you can’t move walls — but you can measure accurately, focus on what carries weight, and make sensible changes inside rooms.

Step 1: Measure the flat, not the building

  • Facing: your flat’s own main door, looking out into the corridor.
  • Outline: your flat’s outer walls, including balconies only if they are enclosed.
  • Centre: the centre of that outline (the floor plan tool calculates it).

Apartment buildings are the worst place for phone compasses — columns, beams and lifts are full of steel. Measure in the open centre of the flat, compare a few spots, and check against the map direction finder.

Step 2: Focus on what carries weight

In our published scoring, five items make up most of the score: main entrance, kitchen, master bedroom, toilets and the prayer area. In flats, the common issues are a toilet in the north-east or centre, a kitchen in the north-east, and a master bedroom in the south-east — check these first with the Vastu Checker.

Step 3: Fixes that don’t need a builder

SituationWhat you can do
Master bedroom not in the south-westBed in the room’s south-west, head to the south or east; or swap rooms with the south-west bedroom.
Kitchen in the north-eastStove in the kitchen’s own south-east corner; cook facing east; keep the kitchen’s north-east light.
Toilet in the north-eastKeep closed, ventilated, dry and bright; use another toilet as the main one if possible.
No space for a pooja roomA wall-mounted mandir in the north-east of the living room, facing east or north while praying.
Clutter in the north-eastMove heavy storage to the south-west; keep the north-east open, clean and well lit.
Desk facing southTurn the desk to face north or east.

Buying a flat: a quick Vastu checklist

  1. Ask for the floor plan with a north arrow — and verify it on-site; brochure arrows can be wrong.
  2. Check the flat’s main door direction and its position along the wall.
  3. Check where the kitchen, toilets and master bedroom fall.
  4. Check the centre isn’t a toilet or staircase.
  5. Remember Vastu is one factor among many: light, ventilation, structure, legal title and location matter more for most buyers.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vastu applicable to flats?

Practitioners generally apply Vastu to the individual flat — its own outline, entrance and room placements — rather than the whole building. Building-level factors (plot, building entrance) still matter to some, but you rarely control them.

How do I check the Vastu of a flat before buying?

Get the floor plan with a north arrow, confirm north on-site (compass or map), then run it through the floor plan analyzer. Focus on the main door, kitchen, master bedroom and toilets — these carry the most weight.

Which floor is good as per Vastu?

Classical Vastu texts were written for independent houses and do not set rules for floor numbers. Advice about “lucky floors” is usually numerology rather than Vastu.

How do I check the direction of my flat?

Stand in your flat’s main doorway facing out (towards the corridor) and measure — that is the flat’s facing. Because buildings disturb compasses, confirm the building’s orientation on the map finder.
